The Gardening Dress That Turned Out As A Skirt

Maybe you have a big passion like me you like to show with themed prints. For me, it's gardening. (And some more...)  Recently I found an amazing vintage border print with gardening tools. I totally had to have it. It arrived a bit later than expected, but I had made pattern plans ahead.
But as so often, life sometimes takes a different course.

First, I wanted to make a warp dress with a solid bodice. But I couldn't find a matching one, and the border fabric was too precious to me to "taint" it with a not perfectly  matching solid. So, then it was going to be a skirt. Again. Better for border prints anyway.

I was not so positive about "stuffing" 3 entire yards into a skirt. I'm currently not happy with my figure. My health issues during the past months are showing up with several extra kilos. Very full skirts make me look like a frigate in full sails. I found a nice 40s pattern with a slimmer shape for sale on Etsy (no, I didn't buy it!)  that could help as a guideline for my own skirt.

But is it allowed to cut such a gorgeous border fabric piece apart? A sacrilege? What could I do with the remaining scrap? After measuring and calculating a bit, I saw I had enough left to make a top later.

Last but not least, my backbone turned out to be the most evil spanner in the works. Since several weeks, a shifted lumbar vertebra causes me incredible pains. Don't ask me how it happened, I don't know. Too much garden work? Slightly ironic. However, I had planned to finish the skirt and the top for my upcoming birthday. But then I ruined my back. Totally. During a crafting project with small kids I had to stoop down too often. Too much for my already damaged backbone. Several days I was more or less knocked-out with pains and totally unable to do anything useful.

But once I get something into my head, I really have to do it, no matter how. Typical Bernese pig-head. And be it only the skirt, I had to have it for my birthday.
The biggest happiness is spending time with my family and friends that day. But I also love to spoil myself, to  give myself a small treat. And as much as I love to sew a new garment for Christmas, a new dress or skirt for my birthday is a nice tradition.

My husband has a talent to take pictures of me in less flattering poses... And it was very windy!

I added some black ric-rac trim at the bottom, I think it's a nice detail picking up the printed chevron line of the border. Still planned is a summery top made from the rest of the border print, and a matching belt.

Luckily I finished the skirt in time. A very short walk away from our home there's a colourful fallow field in full bloom. Poppies, white camion and cornflowers make an enormous mostly red carpet of flowers! We walked there spontaneously, therefore my tatty appearance. As it was rather cool (June so far was rainy and cold), I had to put on my denim jacket, it looks a bit weird.

I really love my new skirt, and it's definitely suitable for a passionate gardener like me. I hope I can show you more pictures once I've made the matching top for my dress!

My daughter. And yes, I love living on the countryside.
